This memorial reminds us the action of Mary Widmer-Curtat and her Swiss Committee to help the Belgian refugees during the First World War. Created by Ernest Wijnants, a Belgian sculptor, this monument was unveiled on the 30th of July 1930 in the presence of Paul-Emile Janson, vice-prime minister of Belgium, Marcel Pilet-Golaz, federal counsellor, and Paul Perret, mayor of Lausanne.
During the First World War, and as early as October 1914, Mary Widmer-Curtat, a woman living in Lausanne, took the initiative to set-up a Swiss Committee to help the Belgian refugees. During 5 years, in often difficult surroundings, this Committee has set-up, departing from Lausanne through all Switzerland, the housing of over 9’000 Belgian refugees, among which over 2’000 children, and soldiers.
